Early Life and Education Nayar grew up in Mumbai, Maharashtra, within a Gujarati family. Her father managed a small bearings business with her mother's support. She pursued her undergraduate studies in Commerce at Sydenham College of Commerce and Economics and later earned her MBA from the Indian Institute of Management Ahmedabad, graduating in the 1985 batch.
About her Career -
Career Nayar began her career at Kotak Mahindra Group in 1993, transitioning from a consulting role at A. F. Ferguson & Co. At Kotak Mahindra, she led the mergers and acquisitions team and subsequently launched institutional equities offices in London and New York City. Returning to India in 2001, she took on roles as managing director of Kotak Mahindra Capital and director of Kotak Securities. She departed from these positions in 2012.
In April 2012, at 50 years old, Nayar invested $2 million of her personal funds to launch Nykaa. By 2021, Nykaa was valued at $2.3 billion, elevating Nayar’s net worth to approximately $1.1 billion. Following Nykaa’s public listing in November 2021, valued at $13 billion, Nayar became the richest self-made Indian woman with a net worth reaching $6.5 billion. Her prominence was further recognized in the Forbes India Rich List of 2022, where she was ranked 44th.

Personal Life Nayar has been married to Sanjay Nayar since 1987; they met during business school. Sanjay Nayar serves as the CEO of Kohlberg Kravis Roberts India. The couple has twin children, Adwaita and Anchit Nayar. Adwaita is the CEO of Nykaa Fashion, while Anchit oversees the retail and e-commerce sectors of Nykaa.
